China Dolls
I refuse to let anyone touch them. So naturally, after seven years, they sit in a snowfall of dust. I take them down one by one from the shelf, wiping the grime from their painted porcelain faces. Shaking out their lacy white dresses, their jointed arms clinking. With trembling hands, I lay them in the suitcase. One, two, three, four, five. I tuck a spare blanket on top, hiding them from view, before I close the suitcase and set it on top of the two others waiting by the door...
